EODD Rural Fire Defense

The Rural Fire Defense Program provides technical assistance, test equipment, and grant assistance to fire departments in the seven county area.
New Fire Departments:
The Rural Fire Defense program helps organize and develop new fire departments or districts in areas currently receiving poor or non-existent fire protection. Since the program began in 1985, the number of fire departments serving these areas has doubled.
Reduced Insurance Rates:
Technical assistance is provided to the fire departments and officials to aid in reducing the ISO rating of the fire departments. A reduction in rating reduces the insurance premiums of the area. These reductions have saved citizens over $2.2 million each year. This amount continues to grow as the departments strive to provide better fire protection.
Equipment:
EODD helps place surplus federal equipment on loan to the departments for conversion to fire fighting use. Assistance to the department in writing specifications for equipment, installing dry hydrants, and testing pumps and equipment is provided.
Grants:
Departments are assisted in obtaining grants, loans, and donations to construct fire stations, purchase equipment, and for operating expenses.
50/50 - $2,500 matching for equipment.
Operational Grants - $2,300 annually for fire departments under 10,000 populations.
